Job Description

LOCATION: Lancaster, PA

SHIFT: Full time (40 Hours per Week), Schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 4:30PM with occasional weekends or evenings as needed to respond to incidents,  conduct drills, or other operational needs.
There is a department on call schedule, with coverage about once per month and a rotating holiday schedule. On Call will not start until about six months into employment.


Assists with the oversight of organizational efforts and activities related to protecting the health and safety of the people working, visiting, or receiving care in the Lancaster General Health facilities.  Along with the Director of Safety and Emergency Management, develops and maintains programs, policies, and procedures to ensure the organization is meeting requirements related to workplace safety, environmental health, and life safety.  Works collaboratively with organizational  leadership and staff to respond to safety concerns.  Serves as a subject matter expert in safety and  environmental health, as well as fire and life safety by maintaining current knowledge of applicable regulations and standards.

The Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Safety and Emergency Management Department considers the health and safety of its employees, patients, volunteers, and visitors of utmost importance. The department leads the overall Safety and Emergency Management Programs to ensure a safe working and care environment along with a comprehensive “all hazards” approach to emergency and disaster situations.  
This position will primarily focus on environmental health and hazardous materials programs with secondary responsibilities to support Emergency Management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Develops, maintains, and implements policies, programs, and resources in compliance with regulatory standards and agencies in various areas of employee safety and environmental health including Environment of Care, fire and life safety, contractor safety management, hazardous materials, as well as Occupational Safety and Health Administration Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

  • Evaluates and coordinates Lancaster General Health’s employee health and safety programs by creating policies, developing safety procedures, assigning safety program responsibilities, providing direction to department leaders, and training to employees as needed.

  • Audits the activity of all LG Health Safety Committees.

  • Acts as the primary liaison with OSHA for purposes of on-going VPP designation

  • Serves the role as Accident and Illness Prevention Service Provider for self-insurance.

  • Oversees the hazardous materials program by maintaining library of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and current inventories of hazardous products, providing assessments for indoor air quality, coordinating industrial hygiene monitoring as needed, filing reports in compliance with local, state and federal agencies, ensuring appropriate waste disposal, as well as providing guidance with spill management.

  • Responsible for compliance activities related to the Environment of Care, including conducting tracer activities, maintaining required documentation, performing risk assessments, submitting reports to regulatory organizations, and participating in inspections by authorities having jurisdiction.

  • Manages the fire and life safety program to assure the safety of building occupants, which includes evaluating fire drills participating in surveys of new and renovated spaces or facilities, and implementing Interim Life Safety Measures.

  • Assists with investigations of near misses and incidents, as well as performs job safety analysis and workstation assessments.

  • Compiles and evaluates trends of work related incidents, injuries, and illnesses.

  • Coordinates injury prevention programs and assists safety liaisons as needed with hazard analysis and prevention of work related injuries/illnesses.

  • Responsible for the oversight of the environmental rounding and hazard inspection program.  Provides information on completion rates, identifies trends and recommends improvements initiatives.

  • Coordinates educational programs and training classes to support various safety and environment of care programs, including  new employee orientation, fire safety, hazard rounding, response team training, and personal protective equipment use.

  • Organizes and attends organizational meetings, as well as participates in professional organizations and meetings as a hospital representative.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

·Prepares and maintains written documentation as required by the profession and the department.

  • Acts as a liaison with other healthcare organizations, safety professionals, and regulatory agencies responsible for regulatory compliance.

  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of safety.

  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental Health, Science-related, Industrial Hygiene, or Healthcare-related field.

  • Two years of safety, environmental health, risk management, or related experience.


  • Three to five years of experience working in a healthcare environment.

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP).

  • Qualifications to serve role as Accident and Illness Prevention Service Provider.
