HOURS: Full-time - 36 hours between 7:00am-5:00pm Mon-Fri

This position is located at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, Lancaster, PA.

This nurse navigator will provide navigation and care coordination primarily for patients diagnosed with sarcoma and gynecologic cancers. 

This RN will work collaboratively with the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute's providers and interdisciplinary departmental colleagues in the medical-surgical clinics, the oncology infusion center, radiation oncology, and oncology clinical support services. There are intermittently additional hours required in order to lead support groups, and to participate in disease teams, tumor boards, and cancer committee meetings. There are also intermittently required weekend and/or evening commitments for community events. 

SUMMARY:  Lancaster General Health/Penn Medicine is currently seeking a Nurse Navigator in our Oncology Clinical Support Department at our Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute.  The Nurse is accountable for providing clinical navigation with the LGH healthcare system for patients newly diagnosed with cancer.  The Nurse Navigator performs clinical and administrative functions to support the coordination of care needs for a newly diagnosed cancer patient. 


Knowledge of pathophysiology of specific disease processes and understands oncology treatment modalities and rationale including surgery, chemotherapy, symptom management, survivorship, surveillance and radiation therapy

Understand and apply current clinical guidelines in implementing a treatment plan.

Manage physical, mental, psychological and/or spiritual well-being while working with the patient to develop a treatment plan and contribute to its implementation and evaluation.

Coordinates the development of a site specific cancer program as a core member of the site specific steering committee consistent with the mission and core values of the hospital. 

Provide continuity of care throughout the entire cancer care experience from pre-diagnosis through survivorship, palliative/hospice care and end of life.

  •   Remain a point of contact for the patient along the continuum of cancer care
  •   Respond appropriately to instances of unsafe practice to safeguard the patient's health
  • Maintain an environment conducive to health and healing including infection control
  •    Provides referrals to supportive resources at local, regional and national levels
  • Provides treatment summaries and oncology care plans for patients after receiving treatment for cancer

Assess the health needs of the patient using a bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework including self-determined health goals and develop a plan of care for the patient based on his or her own personal needs.

Assessment of patient's ability to navigate through the healthcare system and identify potential barriers.  Guide patient through the healthcare system including:​

  • Appropriate referrals to nutrition support, social work, financial counseling, psychology
  • Ability to communicate among specialty practices with the healthcare organization- build relationship with physicians and staff
  • Screen and inform patients who may be eligible for clinical trials for advancement of oncology practice
  • Advocate for the patient's right to autonomy and an informed decision making process
  • Advocate for the patient's right to autonomy and an informed decision making process

Identify and implement methodologies for continuous quality improvement within the oncology service line and support disease specific performance improvement initiatives

Active engagement and participation in community outreach, education and cancer supportive services programs, including appropriate site specific screening programs or educational and health awareness promotion activities.


  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse, issued by the PA State Board of Nursing required.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, healthcare management or related field required.
  • Oncology certification (OCN, OBPN or CBCN) required within 3 years of hire.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience as a clinical nurse in oncology nursing required.
  • Masters of Science Degree Nursing (MSN) preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience as a clinical nurse in oncology nursing preferred.
  • Experience in care coordination preferred.
