Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Assists with planning, organizing and supervising all systems, processes, and operational support as it relates to Lancaster General Health’s professional referrals and authorizations including assisting with oversight of both day to day operations and departmental process improvement initiatives.  Ensures compliance with hospital policies, billing guidelines, and payer policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Assists with assigning and prioritizing staff workload.

  • Assists supervisor/manager in daily operations of The Department of Pulmonary Medicine.  Responsibilities include employee training, time keeping and completing and preparing reporting documents. Performs quality and assurance data checks to support quantitative measures for the department. Acts as a first line resource for department leadership and resolves complex issues. Reviews daily workloads to include assisting in the oversight of daily operations of the department.  Capable of coordinating and communicating effectively during increased volumes or with complex patients.

  • Provides direct support to department leadership in managing budget needs including labor and non-labor expenses and revenue. 

  • Provides direct support to department leadership in regards to all business activities.

  • Maintains a high level understanding of the entire revenue cycle; maintains a working understanding of the components for which supervisor is specifically responsible; maintains a thorough knowledge of staff processes and operations, anticipates changes in the referral and authorization workflow based on changes in the payer policies and billing guidelines and makes appropriate changes/recommendations.

  • Identifies work processes that can be improved upon, eliminated, or handled through electronic processes; breaks down identified problems into small components, understands underlying issues, simplifies and processes complex issues; understands the difference between critical and unimportant facts/details.

  • Monitors and coordinates the daily operations of referrals & authorizations to ensure compliance with hospital policies, payer policies, and billing guidelines; with leadership – assists with developing, maintaining and implementing policies and procedures; assists with manages process improvement and quality assurance.

  • Promotes activities that will build relationships with the physician practices, internal, and external customers.

  • Promotes superior patient experience in all areas of the department

  • Assists and coordinates clinical and business data collection and analysis.  Provides collaboration with EPIC and BI teams.

  • Assists with managing projects in collaboration with Information Services (IS); monitors and ensures IS compliance and supporting project needs; identifies any system dysfunction or discrepancies and makes recommendations for resolving; contributes to and/or leads projects requiring high levels of internal customer interaction, coordination, strategy; develops implementation plans to include timelines and deliverables.

  • Communicates regularly with staff and others, as appropriate, to develop and facilitate timely and accurate information through staff meetings, emails, huddles, and follow-up procedures.

  • Assists with interviewing, on-boarding new staff and continuous training.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

  • Participates in administrative meetings, committees, and project teams as determined necessary.

  • Helps foster an environment of continuous improvement by suggesting ideas to leadership.

  • Assists department leadership with regulatory and accreditation requirements

  • Assists with employee records and compliance

  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivlant (GED).

  • One (1) year of patient referral and authorization experience.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication.

  • Strong analytical abilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of the Revenue Cycle

  • Associates degree in a related field
