Summary

Job Title:  Supervisor Laboratory Services Blood Donor Center

This position is located in Lancaster, PA

Full-time, 1.0, 80 hours per two weeks  working Monday through Friday flexible hours dayshift currently with no weekends or holidays.  The Blood Donor Center is open until 7:00pm.  Great customer Service Skills required.  Will supervise medical technologists and RN's.  Located at the Suburban Outpatient Pavilion.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Supervisor Laboratory Services positions fall into one of the following categories/areas: Pathology Services, Point of Care Testing, Blood Donor Center, Laboratory Reference Testing or any Laboratory section. Each position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising daily operations of its assigned areas.  Assures that quality services are delivered with high reliability in conjunction with the respective physician leadership and management teams.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

All Supervisor Laboratory positions:

 

  • Monitor and direct daily operations including staff schedules, workflow, supply inventory, patient care, equipment function, and intra- and inter-departmental communication.
  • Develop and maintain department standards to ensure quality care is provided. Monitor departmental compliance to all regulatory agencies affecting the dept.
  • Facilitate and/or provide expertise in initial investigation of exception situations, equipment failure, or other adverse events. Document any such events and escalates resolution through additional resources with appropriate judgment and urgency.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Clinical and Information Technology systems and software products as they apply to area of expertise. Provide direction to staff and others in episodes of information system downtime.
  • Lead quality assurance and process improvement programs; ensuring effective change control in implementation of new policies, technology, or procedural changes for specific work groups.
  • Develops and/or assists in the creation of policies or procedures subject to review of physician leadership and management. Coordinate training associated with new policies or procedures to provide clarity and staff compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to staff and/or users. Function in a clinical or technical role in the acute care setting
 

as needed. Maintain clinical knowledge and expertise to effectively contribute to patient care when needed.

  • Serve on committees and task forces as requested. Work collaboratively in a professional manner with varied intra- and inter- departmental teams to assure care continuity and process improvement.
  • Assist in preparation and monitoring of departmental finances including budget variance reporting, and value management.
  • Assists in analysis of new test systems and the decision making process for optimum delivery of services.

Additional specific functions by position:

Pathology Services supervisor role:

Pathology Services include Cytology, Histology, Pathology Transcription and Grossing.

Point of Care Testing supervisor role:

  • Responsible for operations of Laboratory Point of Care Testing in hospital and ambulatory settings, across the enterprise, both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Consults and advises those areas outside direct reporting structure in regulatory risk and best practice.
  • Ensures new policies, technology and procedural changes are communicated accordingly.
  • Assists or supports train the trainer models in areas without a direct reporting structure.

Laboratory Reference Testing supervisor role:

  • Responsible for referral specimen processing and the delivery of results from reference laboratories.
  • Coordinates all activities with referral laboratories to ensure quality services and high reliability. This includes assessment of regulatory compliance, production schedules, courier service, and overall customer service as well as professional business practice that compliments the mission of Penn Medicine/Lancaster General Health.
  • Interacts with external reference laboratories as well as internal resources.

Donor Center Supervisor role:

  • Coordinate with Blood Bank supervisor blood and donor blood recruiter product inventory needs
  • Lead a diverse team of nurses, phlebotomists, technologists
  • In addition to Laboratory regulatory agencies, ensure FDA compliance for blood manufacturing regulations

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

All Supervisor Laboratory positions:

  • Registration/Certification in a clinical healthcare field that includes clinical registration or certification in a diagnostic discipline.
  • Laboratory Positions: Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Health or a related Associates degree in Laboratory Science.
  • Donor Center Position: Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Health or a related Bachelor degree.  Associate or bachelor nursing degree or Associate degree in Laboratory Science.

  • Three (3) or more years of healthcare experience.
  • Must meet CLIA educational requirements for moderate and/or high complexity testing when the Supervisor must serve as a CLIA General Supervisor or Technical/Clinical Consultant role or performs such laboratory testing.

Additional specific minimum required qualifications by position: Point of Care Testing supervisor role:

Valid PA driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

All Supervisor Laboratory positions:

  • Three (3) or more years in principal area of oversight.
  • Previous supervisory experience.

Point of Care Testing supervisor role:

  • Registration/Certification in a clinical healthcare field such as Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Health or a related degree.
  • Three (3) or more years laboratory experience.

Laboratory Reference Testing / Microbiology Supervisor / Core Lab Supervisor / Blood Bank Supervisor role:

  • Registration/Certification in a clinical healthcare field such as Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
  • Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Valid PA driver's license.
  • Three (3) or more years healthcare experience.

 

Pathology Services supervisor role:

  • Three (3) or more years in Pathology
  • Previous supervisory experience.

                                                                                   Donor Center Supervisor:

  • Licensure as RN or registration/certification in a clinical healthcare field such as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or MT/MLT.
  • Valid PA driver's license.
  • Three (3) or more years healthcare experience.
  • This position requires FBI Fingerprinting and Child Abuse Clearances
